Core Values, Culture
and Behaviours

Values are the core beliefs upon which the organisation is founded, that underpins the vision and the mission of the company.

Values and ethics set the expectations of how the company operates and how it treats people, forming a strong bond between all parts of the business. The vision, mission and values must all be consistent and reinforce each other, forming a roadmap that tells everyone in the company where it is going and how it will get there. The company’s values form part of the reasoning processes that help shape and develop the culture of the company.

The following outlines the process for developing and designing the company values:

  • Develop core values and guiding principles in the first instance with directors and in the second instance with a cross-sectional focus group, thereby empowering staff at all levels to take ownership of how they believe people should behave within the company.
  • Develop a sense of purpose, as noted in the vision statement, supported by beliefs about how this purpose will be achieved within ethical guidelines comprising of commitments to different stakeholders.
  • Discuss the question: “of shared values, are they consistent with your structure, strategy, and systems? If not, what needs to change?”
